Who I TeachMedical Students & Residents
As an academic pediatric hospitalist, my patient care and clinical teaching widely overlap. Each time I'm on service, I lead a team of 1-2 pediatric upper level residents, 3-4 pediatric, family medicine, and psychiatric interns, 3-4 medical students, and pharmacy students. Every pediatric intern rotates though a Quality Improvement Curriculum during their general outpatient clinic month. |
Families and Patients
Part of taking care of patients admitted to the hospital involves educated them and their families on their disease process, treatment plans, and expected outcomes. Family teaching methods and explanations vary widely based on family understanding, education level, and involvement in patient care. Patient education often involves the use of our hospital Child Life specialists to supplement and reinforce my medical explanations. |
Where I Teach
I hold a faculty position at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. My primarily clinical location is at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, though I occasionally fill in for our patient clinic faculty when needed. Oklahoma City is my home, and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else.
How I Teach
Any and every way! I'm not a fan of traditional lectures, as listeners retain less than 20% of what is shared. Instead, I prefer to use interactive learning activities; this may include case-based problems, activities, demonstrations, or small group discussions. Pictured above is a QI activity using marshmellows and spaghetti sticks!
